I just wanted to let you all know that I figured out how to resolve
the problem with the iMac that would not boot up without the 8.6 OS
CD in. I thank those that did try to help me out ;o)

I went on line looking for anyone who had the same problem (bootr,
unknown word, Failed Boot, etc). I found many suggestions, but the
one that worked for me was:

When the grey screen came up with the "bootr unknown word" text, I
typed in "mac-boot" and hit return and it worked! The computer
started to boot up without any CD in it. Another suggestion was to
reset the PRAM, which I was unable to do until after I had used the
"mac-boot". Other suggestions were to type in "set-defaults" and hit
return and then type in "reset" and hit return. This did not work.
Another suggestion was type in "reset-nvram" and hit return and also
type in "reset-all" and hit return....but that was not necessary as
the grey screen no longer comes up....thank goodness. As you can
see, I am not a "programmer"!! But thank goodness for Google ;o) I
tried the Apple site, but no matter what search words I put in, I
never came up with any article to help me. Not to say they were not
there, I just didn't find them.
