Nellie:

I know that you requested a non-techie way to fix this problem, but
the only way for that to happen is with 10.4 where this trick is
built into an application with a GUI. Since you're only running
10.2.8, things are going to get a little techie, but its nothing that
you can't handle.

The first thing to do is restart your computer. When you hear the
start up chime, immediately press both the command button and s. The
command button is the one between option and the space bar (also
known as the open-apple key). Continue to hold down these two keys
until you see the screen go black and a bunch of white text fill it
(the white text will be of the techie variety, but not to worry you
don't need to read, interpret or understand any of it). You are now
in single user mode. There will be a point where the white text stops
filling the screen and it sits there waiting for you to do something.
Type this at the prompt:

fsck -f

Hit return and let it start its diagnostic. This will take between 5
and 20 minutes, usually but don't be surprised if it goes longer.
This command is File System ChecK and will search out and repair all
of those bad blocks that Disk Doctor found but for whatever reason
could not repair. Feel free to type in the command again after it has
finished to run it once more (or as many times as you'd like, but you
should only need to do it once. More times won't hurt anything).

Once you are satisfied that fsck has fixed the problem, type:

exit

and hit return. This will exit single user mode and start OS X
normally. That's all there is to it, just get into single user mode,
type fsck -f wait for it to finish, then type exit to get out.
Hopefully not too techie to handle, but if you are still having
problems I do live in Bozeman and would be willing to make a house
call to see what I can do to fix your ailing mac.
